With extensive advances and research imaging the branch of head and neck radiology developed into its own field from Neuroradiology umbrella.

All around the world head neck imaging has taken an impetus in the last two decades, due to the need for separate education and training as neck and skull base has its unique aspects –  superficial structures that allow ultrasound to be used, need for specialist procedures such as DCG and Sialogram, high incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and overlap of several systems including neuro, respiratory, digestive, lymphatic systems and special sense organs contributing complex anatomy and physiology and this require specialist knowledge.

Indian Society of Head and neck Radiology was the need of the hour and it was started by group of radiologists interested in this field; we were ably guided by the head neck stalwart of Indian origin at Hong Kong, Prof Dr T. Anil Ahuja, who has mentored many of us in this field and contributed to teaching, research and education to many parts of India and across the world in the past four decades.

The society was officially formed and registered on 20.05.2019 at Chennai .The founder members include – Dr C Amarnath, Dr A Anbarasu, Dr L Muralikrishna, Dr Chidambaranathan, Dr Varsha Joshi, Dr Rajendra Solanki and Dr Veena Noronha. All necessary statutory requirements such as Pancard, 80G income tax exemption and 12A exemption were obtained in 2019 and 2020.

The vision of the society is to enhance knowledge and training among its members that will deliver accurate patient care and better health of the society. The mission of the society is to play leading role in the advancement of the head and neck radiology in India through regular interaction between its members, other Radiology members, postgraduate students, institutions in in India and abroad. The society will engage in a wide range of activities for sharing of knowledge through scientific meetings, awareness programs, training courses, hands on sessions and conferences.

First two annual conferences were conducted virtually due to covid. The First physical and the Third Annual conference of Indian society of head and neck radiology were held at Chennai along with 75th Annual Conference of TN`&PY IRIA on 16,17,18 December 2022. Professor Dr.Anil.T. Ahuja delivered the ISHNR inaugural Oration. The conference was a massive success with over 760 delegates attending, including consultants and postgraduates from all parts of India.

The ISHNR GBM passes unanimously to name the subsequent ISHNR orations as “Dr Anil Ahuja Annual ISHNR oration” in honour of his contribution to head and neck Radiology .

It is a matter of great pride and privilege for us to start and serve the ISHNR. Under the able leadership of our new President Dr Varsha Joshi and Secretary General Dr. Jyoti Kumar, we are sure ISHNR will reach greater heights in the coming years.

We are committed to support office bearers to continue and enhance the vision and mission of ISHNR for a bright future and better patient care.
